Lead Pencil

Yogesh Kumar Baghel, IISc, Bangalore

Lead pencil pen has poor lead holding mechanism as it does not utilize the last 25% of lead’s length.

Each time it actually utilizes only 75% of the lead’s length. The left out lead is wasted.

When the lead is pushed, the minimum length which is required to keep the lead steady gets wasted, as one end the lead is free and the other end is held back by the pencil.

Here the design of lead pencil’s mechanism could be better so that it can utilize full length of a lead. One can reduce this wastage by bringing the holding ring little closer to the tip.
