A few laptops are designed in such a way that plugging-in more than one USB device at the same time is almost impossible.
As most of the USB devices (Pen Drives, Net Cards, Mice, etc.) occupy a little more space around the USB port, making simultaneous connections to the ports (placed side-by-side) is not quite possible.
