Keypad on Mobile Phones
Ritwik Das, Kolkata
The keypad of a normal mobile phone is designed with alphabets 'abc' starting at key 2 and then serially following. This means the alphabet keys are not arranged according to the frequency of occurrence of the particular letter in the English language.
For example, 'e' is a letter which is used most frequently in the English language and it occurs as the 2nd letter on key 3. This makes us press the key ‘3’ twice to type 'e'.

Remedy:
If the letters of the English alphabet are so arranged that the no. of key presses are minimized then it will reduce the time taken for typing and also will prolong the life of the keypad.
For example, if 'e' is made the 1st letter on key 3 then only 1 keystroke is required to type 'e'. Similarly all the 1st letters of the 8 keys (2-9) should have letters that are most frequently used and then the 2nd letters which are not so frequently used and so on.
