Introducing side middle berths in Indian Railways may have increased the number of passengers.

It makes the journey uncomfortable for the user as it causes prob, lack of ventilation, space, and difficulty with locking mechanisms and ease of access to switches.

I disagree. It is great for passengers travelling by RAC ticket. It is very difficult to sit for a whole nights journey on the side seats. Instead this side middle birth allows both the RAC passengers of the side seats to get a opportunity to sleep or lie on their back. I travel every weekend to my home town by a train (night journey) and a lot of times it has saved my back. sitting on the side seats is extremely uncomfortable for an entire night journey.
